Welcome to my world of whimsy!
Each mirror is an original work combining my experience of
the world and the odd materials found therein. This art form is incomplete
without you, the image within.
I prefer to use materials with
previous lives, so I haunt thrift, second-hand, and building re-use
establishments. One of my particular delights is finding objects that have a
marvelous hideousness and giving them a second life as swans. The mirrors
and everything on them are a mix of new, antique, collectable, vintage,
modern and timeless.
I've been fascinated with refraction
and color all my life. Rainy Pacific Northwest afternoons passed without notice as
long as I had my Mom's button and jewelry boxes. When Shipwreck Beads opened
their first store, I could be found there on my bike with my allowance more
Saturdays than not. The forms and shapes you see are ones that have been
forcing their way out of my fingers onto every margin I remember facing.
The art form is self-developed; I had
to find some sort of medium that would let me create those shapes and
intricacies. Through the process of elimination and addition, the mirrors
found their lives. I needed the fluidity of form and intricacy allowed by
pencil, combined with refraction, and found materials for meaning and light
play. What you see is the result of around five years of experimentation.
Each large mirror takes between
100-300 hours, depending on complexity and inspiration. They are backed and
wired for hanging (on a stud, please!). The mirror tiles take much less time, but still
more than you might think. They can hang from any small nail. The mirrors are relatively
sturdy; treat with the same care you would any original art piece. They enjoy an occasional
dusting and your image daily.
